Tottenham close gap to top four with win over Arsenal in North London derby

Tottenham Hotspur have drawn within one point of the top four after a 3-0 thumping of North London rivals Arsenal.

Both teams went into the derby clash in forth and fifth place. Arsenal were leading their rivals with four points and sat in fourth place but Spurs were looking to close the gap and take the fight for top four down to the wire.

A brace from former Arsenal academy product Harry Kane and a goal from man on form Heung-Min Son sank the Gunners and reduced their lead over Spurs to just one point.

The match had a bit of controversy but it showed the intent of Spurs manager Antonio Conte to not only put on a show for the fans at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, but show his intent of taking the club to bigger heights next season.

This was the first time both teams were playing in a full Tottenham Hotspur stadium, which was completed during the pandemic and could not have fans in its first derby.

Match report: Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 0 Arsenal

Both teams went at it from the start, making cynical challenges and defending with their lives. The tough nature of the game led to the opening goal which came from a clumsy Arsenal challenge in their box.

Swedish winger Dejan Kulusevski cut inside and sent a cross in which found its way to the back post where Arsenal fullback Cedric Soares clumsily felled Son. Referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot for Harry Kane to score his 12th goal in 17 North London derbies.

In the 33rd minute, Arsenal defender Rob Holding saw a second yellow for another cynical foul after being booked for one in the seventh minute. Both bookings were against Son and it was the 13th red card for Arsenal in Mikel Arteta's tenure, which is the most in any club in that time frame.

Spurs smelled blood and pushed for another, and we're 2-0 up within four minutes of Holding being sent off. January signing Rodrigo Bentancur got on the end of a corner kick from Son, flicked it to the back post for Kane to score his 13th derby goal.

Kane would have a shot saved and Spurs fullback Emerson Royal would scuff a chance to make it three. Son made no mistake, however, scoring the third just two minutes into the second half.

Kane almos lost Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes, who was able to recover but ended up looking the ball towards Son to cleverly chip the onrushing Aaron Ramsdale. The match could have seen more goals from Spurs but Ramsdale had one of those nights where he was almost unbeatable.

Tottenham will also be happy as Son is close to drawing level with Mohamed Salah for the golden boot. The South Korean international is on 21 league goals for the season while Salah is on 22.

Kane won the award last season and with Spurs failing to win anything this season, the golden boot award for Son would be a consolation for the side.

Arsenal, meanwhile, risk ending the season on a low after their latest fall to their bitter rivals. Their next matches are Newcastle United and Everton and they will be hoping that Spurs fail to get any points from their last two opponents Burnley and Norwich City as they seek a first UEFA Champions League appearance since 2017.
